HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has ramped up relief efforts following heavy rains that have resulted in at least nine fatalities and flooding in low-lying areas. Relief camps have been set up for displaced residents.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is scheduled to meet with officials to discuss the ongoing relief measures. Although rain eased on Monday morning, many areas remain affected, particularly in Khammam, where the Munneru rivulet has caused significant damage. Residents reported that their belongings were lost and they are struggling to access drinking water, with some local aid provided but official relief still lacking.
Traffic on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway has been diverted due to water overflow. The South Central Railway has canceled and diverted train services in response to the flooding.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Adilabad district. In response, Cyberabad Police have advised IT and ITES companies to allow employees to work from home on September 2 to reduce commuting risks and traffic congestion. Additionally, schools across Hyderabad district will be closed on September 2 as a precaution.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to discuss the flood situation and the extent of the damage.
