A recent tweet by the ‘Earthquake Research and Analysis’ group has triggered concern, stating the possibility of a major earthquake near Ramagundam, located in the erstwhile Karimnagar district of Telangana. According to their report, the quake could impact areas ranging from Hyderabad and Warangal to Amaravati and parts of Maharashtra.
However, no official confirmation has been issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) or any recognized scientific authority. Experts clarify that predicting earthquakes in advance is currently not scientifically reliable, urging the public not to panic.
Notably, on December 4, 2024, an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 was recorded near Medaram in Mulugu district, with tremors felt in Hyderabad, Warangal, Khammam, and even some parts of Andhra Pradesh.
While Telangana generally falls under Seismic Zone-2, indicating a low earthquake risk, occasional tremors are possible due to fault lines in the Godavari basin region. Previous tremors in this area did not cause any significant damage.
Despite the viral nature of the tweet warning of a potential quake in Peddapalli district, officials reiterate that there is no verified scientific evidence to support these claims and the public should stay calm and avoid misinformation.
