Tahawwur Rana Likely to Be Lodged in Tihar Jail After Arrival in India

New Delhi, April 10: As India awaits the arrival of Tahawwur Rana, the accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, sources indicate that he is likely to be lodged in Delhi’s high-security Tihar Jail upon his arrival in the national capital on Thursday.

The 64-year-old, who is being extradited from the United States to face trial in India, is expected to be placed in a high-security ward at Tihar, according to officials. All necessary arrangements for his custody have already been made at the jail.

Rana, a Pakistan-born Canadian national, is a close associate of David Coleman Headley (also known as Daood Gilani), a key conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed 166 people. A special chartered flight carrying Rana departed the US on Wednesday, April 9, and he is expected to land in Delhi today.

This extradition marks a major step in India’s long-standing effort to bring those responsible for the Mumbai attacks to justice. Rana was handed over to Indian authorities after a lengthy legal process in the US, during which he exhausted all legal avenues to resist his extradition.

Upon arrival in India, Rana will be taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is overseeing the extradition in coordination with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). He is expected to be produced before a Delhi court shortly thereafter.

Rana faces multiple charges under Indian law, including criminal conspiracy, waging war against the Government of India, murder, forgery, and offenses under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). However, Mumbai Police have yet to receive an official communication regarding his possible transfer to the city.

In addition to his ties with Headley, Rana is believed to have had connections with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency and the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba.
