Karnataka Assembly Passes Bill to Increase Salaries of Ministers and MLAs
Bengaluru, March 21: The Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Friday passed the ‘Karnataka Legislature Salaries, Pensions and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2025’, which significantly increases the salaries and allowances of MLAs, MLCs, ministers, and Assembly staff.
The decision, coming at a time when the government has raised concerns about a shortage of funds, has sparked criticism and debate. The Bill was passed amid uproar related to the ongoing honey trap controversy.
According to sources, the Bill proposes:
-
Chief Minister's salary to be increased by 100% from ₹75,000 to ₹1.50 lakh.
-
Ministers' salaries to rise by 108%, from ₹60,000 to ₹1.25 lakh.
-
MLAs' salaries to be doubled from ₹40,000 to ₹80,000.
-
Ministers' house rent allowance to be increased from ₹1.20 lakh to ₹2.50 lakh.
-
Speaker and Legislative Council Chairman’s salary to increase from ₹75,000 to ₹1.25 lakh, with allowances rising from ₹4 lakh to ₹5 lakh.
-
Legislators' pension to be increased from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000.
-
Annual travel allowance for flights and railways to increase from ₹2.50 lakh to ₹3.50 lakh.
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot approved the Bill on Thursday, and the government presented it in the legislature on Friday, the final day of the budget session. The revision of salaries is expected to put an additional burden of ₹62 crore on the state government.
The last salary revision for legislators was done in 2022, under the previous BJP government, which had decided to revise salaries and perks every five years. Legislators had also demanded this hike in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC)
