The tariff war initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump has triggered economic ripples across the globe. Surprisingly, its impact has reached as far as Andhra Pradesh, affecting the state’s aquaculture sector. Expressing concern over the situation, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has already taken note of the matter.
In response, he wrote a letter today to Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. In the letter, he pointed out that the 27% tariff imposed by the United States on Indian exports is severely hurting domestic aqua farmers. He urged the Union Government to request the U.S. to reconsider and reduce the high tariffs and provide exemptions for Indian aquaculture products.
He also noted that the increased tariffs are prompting foreign buyers to cancel their orders, leading to a crisis where cold storage facilities in the state are unable to accommodate the unsold produce. Emphasizing that the fisheries sector plays a significant role in the state's GDP, the Chief Minister appealed for immediate support from the Centre to assist the aqua farming community during this crisis.
Chandrababu brought to the Union Minister’s attention the uncertainty faced by aqua farmers and urged the central government to act swiftly to resolve the issue.
