In Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh PDS rice valued at Rs 215 crore was seized

In Kakinada district, Andhra Pradesh, strict measures are being taken to curb the diversion of PDS (Public Distribution System) rice into the black market, according to District Collector Shan Mohan Sagili.
Addressing reporters at the Collectorate, Shan Mohan Sagili disclosed that authorities had seized a substantial quantity of 51,427 metric tonnes of rice worth Rs 215 crore over the past 15 days. This rice was originally allocated for the Public Distribution System.
He detailed the tactics employed by smugglers, who modify and polish PDS rice to enhance its quality before attempting to illegally export it via Anchorage Port to other countries.
Under the supervision of Joint Collector S Ram Sunder Reddy and Civil Supplies officials, raids were conducted on 119 rice mills and 76 godowns during this period.
Samples of the seized PDS rice have been sent to laboratories for testing to determine if they are recycled. Initial results indicate that 12,184 metric tonnes of rice have been confirmed as recycled through these tests.
Shan Mohan Sagili warned of severe repercussions for those involved in the illegal storage and export of PDS rice. He mentioned the formation of a special inspection team comprising officials from departments such as Port, Customs, Police, and Civil Supplies to prevent further illegal activities.
To bolster these efforts, special checkpoints will be established on major roads leading to the port and within the port itself to detect any transportation of recycled PDS rice.
Meanwhile, Joint Collector Ram Sunder Reddy highlighted additional measures taken to stabilize essential commodity prices in the district. These include setting up special counters in 13 locations, including Kakinada, Pithapuram, Gollaprolu, Kathipudi, and Tuni, where red gram is sold at Rs 160 per kg, steamed rice at Rs 49 per kg, and raw rice at Rs 48 per kg.
Efforts are also underway to monitor and regulate the prices of vegetables by closely observing supply and demand dynamics.
The actions underscore ongoing efforts by local authorities to safeguard the integrity of the PDS and ensure essential commodities remain accessible and affordable to the public.
