Rajahmundry News, July 25: Rajahmundry – Kovvur Road-cum-Rail Bridge, the largest in Asia, has been damaged. The traffic of lorries and buses on this bridge has been permanently stopped. In view of the damage to the area where the bridge deck joints are located, traffic congestion and safety of the bridge, as per the instructions given by the R&B officials, orders were issued banning lorries and buses.

 The traffic of trucks and buses was stopped on the available road cum rail bridge connecting Rajahmundry-Kovvur. As per the orders of East Godavari District Collector Dr K Madhavilatha, these bans have come into effect from Sunday evening. Vehicular traffic was allowed from 1974 after the construction of the largest road-cum-railway bridge in Asia was completed. The three-and-a-half-kilometer long bridge has a life span of 65 years. It has been 49 years since this bridge came into existence.

However, in view of the current incidents of heavy traffic increasing day by day, in view of the damage caused to the areas on the deck joints due to heavy laden vehicles driving on this bridge, as per the instructions given by the R&B officials for the safety of the bridge, orders have been issued prohibiting the lorries and buses from passing through this bridge.

 Traffic regulations have been implemented to allow the movement of two wheelers, three wheelers and cars as part of the strategy to ensure the bridge's survival and public accessibility for many more years. In 2007 and 2011, an expert committee had given a report that if vehicles weighing more than 10.2 tons were to cross this bridge, the bridge might be damaged. In this regard, the authorities are asking people to cooperate. The collector ordered that the poles should be set up in the middle so that the allowed vehicles can move on the bridge.

Superintendent of Police, District Transport Officer, District Public Transport Officer (RTC) of Turpu Godavari district have issued instructions to them to take appropriate action. Heavy vehicles and buses traveling via Kovvur – Rajahmundry will have to cross the Gammon Bridge, a four-lane bridge on the national highway. However, passengers are facing difficulties due to the sudden stoppage of buses. Passengers complain that they have to go back to Chuttu by bus and incur a lot of expenses along with the long distance.

  రాజమండ్రి-కొవ్వూరును కలిపే అందుబాటులో ఉన్న రోడ్డు కం రైలు వంతెనపై లారీలు, బస్సుల రాకపోకలు నిలిచిపోయాయి. తూర్పుగోదావరి జిల్లా కలెక్టర్ డాక్టర్ కె మాధవీలత ఆదేశాల మేరకు ఆదివారం సాయంత్రం నుంచి ఈ నిషేధాజ్ఞలు అమల్లోకి వచ్చాయి. 1974 నుండి ఆసియాలో అతిపెద్ద రోడ్డు-కమ్-రైల్వే వంతెన నిర్మాణం పూర్తయిన తర్వాత వాహనాల రాకపోకలు అనుమతించబడ్డాయి. మూడున్నర కిలోమీటర్ల పొడవున్న ఈ వంతెన జీవితకాలం 65 ఏళ్లు. ఈ వంతెన వచ్చి 49 ఏళ్లు పూర్తయ్యాయి.

అయితే ఈ బ్రిడ్జిపై భారీ లోడు వాహనాలు నడపడం వల్ల డెక్ జాయింట్స్‌కు నష్టం వాటిల్లుతున్న దృష్ట్యా ప్రస్తుతం బ్రిడ్జి భద్రత దృష్ట్యా ఆర్‌అండ్‌బీ అధికారులు ఇచ్చిన ఆదేశాల మేరకు ఈ వంతెన మీదుగా లారీలు, బస్సులు రాకుండా నిషేధం విధిస్తూ ఉత్తర్వులు జారీ చేశారు.

  బ్రిడ్జి మనుగడ మరియు అనేక సంవత్సరాల పాటు ప్రజలకు అందుబాటులో ఉండేలా వ్యూహంలో భాగంగా ద్విచక్ర వాహనాలు, త్రిచక్ర వాహనాలు మరియు కార్ల కదలికలను అనుమతించడానికి ట్రాఫిక్ నిబంధనలు అమలు చేయబడ్డాయి. 10.2 టన్నుల కంటే ఎక్కువ బరువున్న వాహనాలు ఈ వంతెనపైకి వెళితే వంతెన దెబ్బతినే అవకాశం ఉందని 2007, 2011లో నిపుణుల కమిటీ నివేదిక ఇచ్చింది. ఈ విషయంలో ప్రజలు సహకరించాలని అధికారులు కోరుతున్నారు. వంతెనపై అనుమతించిన వాహనాలు వెళ్లేందుకు వీలుగా మధ్యలో స్తంభాలు ఏర్పాటు చేయాలని కలెక్టర్ ఆదేశించారు.

తూరుపు గోదావరి జిల్లాకు చెందిన సూపరింటెండెంట్ ఆఫ్ పోలీస్, జిల్లా రవాణా అధికారి, జిల్లా పబ్లిక్ ట్రాన్స్‌పోర్ట్ ఆఫీసర్ (ఆర్‌టిసి) తగిన చర్యలు తీసుకోవాలని వారికి ఆదేశాలు జారీ చేశారు. కొవ్వూరు - రాజమండ్రి మీదుగా వెళ్లే భారీ వాహనాలు, బస్సులు జాతీయ రహదారిపై నాలుగు లైన్ల వంతెన అయిన గామన్ బ్రిడ్జి మీదుగా వెళ్లాలి. అయితే ఒక్కసారిగా బస్సులు నిలిచిపోవడంతో ప్రయాణికులు ఇబ్బందులు పడుతున్నారు. బస్సులో చుట్టు తిరిగి వెళ్లాల్సి వస్తోందని, దూరభారంతో పాటు చాలా ఖర్చులు చేయాల్సి వస్తోందని ప్రయాణికులు వాపోతున్నారు.
