On October 10, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala, Reece Topley's outstanding bowling performance combined with Dawid Malan's exceptional batting led defending champions England to a convincing 137-run victory over Bangladesh in their second match of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
England chose to bat first and posted a formidable total of 364/9, marking their third-highest score in a World Cup match. This impressive total was mainly driven by Malan's outstanding performance, scoring 140 runs off 107 balls, and Joe Root contributing 82 runs off 68 balls.
In response, Bangladesh struggled to maintain their batting lineup, with only Litton Das (76) and Mushfiqur Rahim (51) showcasing some resilience. Reece Topley emerged as the key bowler for England, taking 4 wickets for 43 runs in his allotted overs.
Chasing the target of 365, Bangladesh faced a challenging start as Topley made significant breakthroughs in the Powerplay, taking three crucial wickets. Despite some fight shown by Litton Das, scoring a brisk half-century in 38 balls, and a valiant effort by Mushfiqur Rahim (51) and Hridoy (39), Bangladesh fell short and were bowled out for 227 runs in 48.2 overs.
Earlier in England's innings, Dawid Malan displayed aggressive batting, well-supported by Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. Bairstow, in his 100th ODI, began strongly alongside Malan, and both batsmen achieved their fifties, propelling England to 61/0 by the end of the Powerplay. Malan's exceptional century, comprising 16 fours and five sixes, was the cornerstone of England's innings. Despite losing wickets towards the end, England managed to reach a formidable total of 364/9.
Notable performances from the Bangladesh side included Mahedi Hasan's 4/71 and Shoriful Islam's 3/75.
