Bengaluru Airport Becomes India's First to Launch Sensory Room for Neurodivergent Passengers

Bengaluru Airport Introduces India’s First Sensory Room for Neurodivergent Passengers

Bengaluru, March 12: Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has launched India’s first sensory room to support passengers with autism, anxiety, and mental health conditions. This special room is designed to provide a calm and comfortable space for people with sensory sensitivities. It is located near the 080 International Lounge on Level 4 of Terminal 2.

Airports can be overwhelming due to bright lights, loud announcements, and crowded spaces, making it difficult for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and anxiety disorders. To help them, Bengaluru airport’s sensory room offers a peaceful environment where passengers can relax before their journey. The airport's CEO, Hari Marar, stated that their goal is to make travel inclusive and stress-free for everyone.

The sensory room was developed in collaboration with Incluzza, a disability inclusion organization. It features soft lighting, calming sounds, a weighted blanket, therapy mats, and interactive elements like a bubble tube and sensory toy station. Research shows that spending even 15–30 minutes in a sensory-friendly space can reduce stress and improve well-being. This initiative is a step towards making airports more accessible and comfortable for all travelers.
