HYDERABAD: Will the Centre Approve Rs 2,000 Crore for Telangana's Flood Relief?
The question of whether the Central Government will respond positively to Telangana’s request for an immediate Rs 2,000 crore in flood relief is sparking debate in political circles. This uncertainty stems from past experiences where the Centre was less accommodating of similar requests during previous floods that hit Hyderabad.
Currently, Telangana has allocated eight Lok Sabha seats to the BJP, and two of its ministers represent the state in the Central Government. With significant crop damage, affected homes, and disrupted livelihoods due to heavy rains, the public is hopeful that this political support will translate into financial aid.
The state government estimates the financial impact of the recent floods and rains at approximately Rs 5,000 crore and is urging the Centre to release at least Rs 2,000 crore immediately.
The Centre faces a dilemma: denying funds to Telangana while potentially providing aid to Andhra Pradesh, which is also flood-affected, could lead to criticism from both Congress and BRS. Such a move might prompt questions about the influence of BJP MPs and why Telangana’s needs are not being addressed.
Additionally, there is speculation that a generous aid package could benefit BJP leaders in Telangana, who are aiming to challenge Congress dominance in upcoming Assembly elections. Union ministers Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay are expected to play a crucial role in advocating for the state's needs, as the BJP seeks to bolster its position in Telangana.
