Rohit Sharma Becomes the Second-Most Successful Indian Captain with Two ICC Titles
Dubai, March 9: Rohit Sharma, nearing the end of his ODI career, became the second-most successful Indian captain after winning his second ICC title. India defeated New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy final at Dubai International Stadium.
This victory gives India its second ICC title in under nine months. India had previously won the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit's leadership.
This win also marked India’s fourth consecutive appearance in ICC finals in less than two years — with the World Test Championship (2023), ODI World Cup (2023), T20 World Cup (2024), and now the Champions Trophy. Rohit became the first captain to lead his team in the final of all four major ICC events.
Rohit helped India end a 10-year ICC title drought by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, a decade after MS Dhoni led India to victory in the 2013 Champions Trophy.
Dhoni remains India’s most successful captain with three ICC titles: the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. Rohit, with his two ICC titles, surpasses the achievements of Sourav Ganguly (2002 Champions Trophy) and Kapil Dev (1983 ODI World Cup).
Rohit's 76-run knock played a key role in India’s successful chase of 252. Shreyas Iyer (48), K.L. Rahul (34*), and Axar Patel (29) also contributed, ensuring India’s victory with one over to spare.
With this win, India became the first country to win the Champions Trophy three times in the tournament's history.
