Telangana Government Raises Retirement Age for University Professors

The Telangana government has made a significant decision regarding university professors in the state. The retirement age for professors has been increased from 60 to 65 years, and an official order has been issued to implement this change.

The Telangana State Council of Higher Education had earlier recommended this extension, aiming to retain experienced faculty members and strengthen higher education in the state. This decision will impact universities under the state’s higher education department, which currently oversees 12 universities.

At present, only 757 out of the 2,817 sanctioned professor positions are filled, leaving 2,060 vacancies. Additionally, two to three professors retire each month from major institutions like Osmania University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH), and Kakatiya University, further increasing the faculty shortage.

This move is expected to help bridge the gap in teaching staff and improve the quality of education in Telangana’s universities.
