1st ODI: Shreyas Iyer Reveals Surprise Selection After Late-Night Call from Rohit Sharma

Shreyas Iyer’s Late-Night Selection Surprise in 1st ODI Against England

Nagpur, Feb 6: Shreyas Iyer played a key role in India’s victory over England in the 1st ODI, scoring a match-winning 59 off 36 balls. However, after the match, Iyer revealed a surprising fact—he wasn’t supposed to be in the playing XI.

India had already made a forced change as Virat Kohli was ruled out due to a swollen knee. Yashasvi Jaiswal was handed his ODI debut, but many believed he was a direct replacement for Kohli. However, Iyer’s comments suggest that Jaiswal was already in the team’s plans, and Iyer was initially set to be benched.

Late-Night Call from Rohit Sharma

"So, funny story," Iyer shared. "I was watching a movie last night, thinking I could relax, but then I got a call from the skipper saying that I might play because Virat has a swollen knee. I immediately went to my room and went to sleep early."

When asked about being left out of the original playing XI, Iyer kept things positive. "You know what you want me to say, but I'm going to keep it low-key and just enjoy this victory," he said.

Jaiswal’s Inclusion & India’s Top-Order Reshuffle

Jaiswal’s selection meant a change in India’s batting order. Regular openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were split, with Gill moving down to No. 3. If Kohli had played, it is unclear who would have batted at No. 3.

Iyer has been India’s go-to No. 4 batter in ODIs, playing a crucial role in the 2023 World Cup, where he scored 468 runs at an average of 66.25, including a 105-run knock in the semi-final against New Zealand.

India’s Preparation for Champions Trophy

With the Champions Trophy starting on February 19, this ODI series against England is India’s final chance to test their team combination. Jaiswal’s inclusion suggests that India wants him ready as a backup opener, while Gill’s middle-order stint could be a trial for future changes.

Conclusion

Iyer’s last-minute selection worked in India’s favor, and his performance strengthened his case for the upcoming matches. With Kohli’s fitness still uncertain, India might continue experimenting with their top order.
