CM Revanth Announces States Inclination to Rename Potti Sreeramulu University After Suravaram Reddy

HYDERABAD: In response to CPI MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao's request, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced that the state government is inclined to rename Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University after Suravaram Pratap Reddy, a notable freedom fighter from the Nizam-ruled Hyderabad state.
Addressing the Assembly during a discussion on a Bill related to state law acronyms and other matters, the Chief Minister noted that Sambasiva Rao had reminded him of a promise made by former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao regarding the university's renaming.
Revanth Reddy invited all Assembly parties to share their views on this proposal. He also highlighted the significant contributions of Suravaram Pratap Reddy, a journalist, writer, and poet known for his critical stance against the Nizam’s oppressive rule and his work with the ‘Golconda Patrika’.
Potti Sreeramulu, honored as an Amarajeevi (immortal being) in neighboring Andhra Pradesh for his pivotal role in the struggle for the formation of Andhra state, undertook a 56-day hunger strike which ultimately led to his death.
The proposal to rename the university follows the expiration of a clause in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014, which designated Hyderabad as the common capital for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for a decade. The opposition BRS and CPI have supported the Chief Minister’s proposal.
