CM Chandrababu Naidu Declares Budameru Floods a National Calamity

VIJAYAWADA: CM Chandrababu Naidu Deems Budameru Floods a National Calamity
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has labeled the Budameru floods in Vijayawada as the most severe disaster he has encountered in his political career, announcing plans to urge the Central Government to recognize it as a national calamity.
In a statement to the press on Monday night, Naidu indicated that detailed reports will be submitted to the Centre, requesting substantial financial aid to manage the crisis. “This disaster has caused immense human suffering and extensive property damage. The impact on crops and both public and private assets has been severe. We will be seeking the Centre's support and assistance,” he said.
Naidu provided an update on the flood situation, noting that the Budameru River's water levels have receded by 1.5 feet since Sunday night. He anticipated further decreases by Tuesday, with a return to normalcy expected soon.
He also highlighted that the Prakasam Barrage has experienced unprecedented inflows, reaching 11.43 lakh cusecs—its highest ever. The barrage's discharge capacity is 11.90 lakh cusecs, and inflows have started to decline, down to 11.19 lakh cusecs by Monday night.
Naidu criticized YSRC chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy's allegations that the state government deliberately diverted Budameru water to protect his property, calling the accusations unfounded. “Jagan’s comments reveal his ignorance. His government’s failure to address the breach during their tenure contributed to this disaster,” Naidu remarked. He advised Jagan to cease spreading false claims about his administration and the Capital Amaravati for political gain.
Reflecting on the crisis, Naidu expressed deep concern for the flood victims in Ajit Singh Nagar. He emphasized the need for officials to be compassionate and patient in their relief efforts. “These individuals are enduring severe hardship. We must ensure that aid reaches everyone, especially those in the most affected areas, and minimize loss of life,” he asserted.
