Ayushman Bharat: This insurance covers almost all critical health conditions – but not these treatments. Do you know what they are?

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), run by the central government, has become a lifeline for millions across the country. It provides health insurance to the poor, underprivileged, economically weaker sections, backward communities, and senior citizens. Recently, the government extended this scheme to cover everyone above 70 years of age. Under this scheme, each family is entitled to an annual health coverage of ₹5 lakh.

This insurance plan covers the cost of treatment for almost all life-threatening medical conditions. Most inpatient treatments (those requiring hospitalization) are included under the scheme. However, there are certain treatments that fall outside its coverage.

Treatments and conditions excluded from the Ayushman Bharat scheme:

The National Health Benefit Package Guidelines list the diseases and treatments that are excluded from Ayushman Bharat insurance coverage. Here's a summary:

• No coverage for OPD treatments:
  Common ailments like fever, cold, or other minor issues that are treated through regular outpatient (OPD) visits without hospitalization are not covered under the scheme.

• No coverage for general check-ups:
  If a patient is admitted to the hospital just for a general check-up or is prescribed vitamins and then discharged, such treatments and expenses are not covered by Ayushman Bharat.

• No dental treatments covered:
  Most dental procedures are not included under this scheme. Additionally, treatments for infertility, vaccination programs, cosmetic surgery, circumcision, and artificial respiration support are also excluded, as per the guidelines.
