In Washington on November 8th, a man carrying a firearm was apprehended in the vicinity of the US Capitol, as confirmed by law enforcement authorities. The suspect is currently in custody, and police are conducting a search of the individual's belongings.
In a statement posted on Tuesday, the US Capitol Police (USCP) announced, "USCP Officers just arrested a man with a gun in the park across from Union Station. At this time, we have no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat. We are working to gather more information and will provide additional details once they are confirmed. We have conducted a thorough search of the secured area in the park. Out of an abundance of caution, we are also in the process of searching the suspect's belongings. The investigation is ongoing."
Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger, addressing reporters later in the day, indicated that the man would face charges for unlawfully carrying a firearm on Capitol grounds, and additional charges could be filed, according to CNN. Manger mentioned, "There is some indication that he may be dealing with some mental health issues." He added that the police approached the individual after being alerted by another person. When the individual refused to comply with orders to drop the weapon, an officer employed a taser to subdue the suspect.
