In Visakhapatnam, the workers at the Gangavaram Port are protesting. The situation near the port has become tense. The workers at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant expressed their eagerness to support the port's employees in their struggle without resorting to violence. Approximately 3,300 workers attempted to rally at the Gangavaram Port. Some of them tried to breach the security from Gajuwaka Balacheruvu side and were stopped before reaching the gate. The police intervened and dispersed the crowd to maintain order.
The police personnel, who were heavily armed, surrounded the employees and workers near the gate and brutally attacked them. With the support of other security forces, the Gangavaram Port authorities intensified the assault. Despite their attempts to move backward, around 1,500 steel plant workers and 1,800 contract workers staged a protest about 50 yards away from the port gate. The police immediately issued an alert as there was a possibility of disturbances near the Gangavaram Port.
The ship from abroad carrying a cargo of 2,68,000 metric tons of steel is still docked at Gangavaram Port. The steel plant owners demand payment of their dues, amounting to Rs. 50 crore, to release this cargo. The port authorities have agreed to allow the clearance of the cargo to resolve the situation. The issue of the cargo's clearance has led to disputes with the Vishakhapatnam Steel Plant employees' unions, who are advocating for the right to unload the shipment.
