In the city of Vijayawada, a young man named Navin, known for his expertise in disguises and tricks, managed to obtain 658 SIM cards with just one photo. After discovering cases of fraudulent registration, the police filed a complaint, revealing the use of counterfeit documents. Similar activities were also observed in the jurisdictions of Ajitsinghnagar and Vissannapet police stations, where around 150 fake SIM cards were issued with deceptive papers.
This fraudulent operation came to light with the help of artificial intelligence and facial recognition-powered solutions for telecom SIM subscriber verification (known as EASTR). The Department of Telecommunications collaborated with this software tool to detect and prevent the issuance of fraudulent SIM cards.
The tool automatically blocked associated numbers, helping identify SIM card dealers by extracting their IDs from various telecom operators. This initiative brought to light the incident involving Navin, who managed to obtain 658 SIM cards under false pretenses. The use of these fake documents for SIM cards could lead to serious consequences in the hands of anti-social elements, a fact that the police emphasized.
