15 Killed as Mahakumbh Rush Leads to Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station
New Delhi, Feb 16: At least 15 people died in a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night when thousands rushed to catch trains to Prayagraj for the Mahakumbh Mela.
Chaos at the Station
The stampede took place around 8 p.m. on platforms 14 and 15, where a large crowd had gathered, many waiting for trains to Prayagraj, the site of the Mahakumbh Mela.
Rescue Efforts Underway
A senior official from LNJP Hospital confirmed the deaths. Emergency teams, including Delhi Police, Railway Protection Force (RPF), and fire brigades, were quickly deployed to manage the situation. At least four fire engines assisted with crowd control and evacuation.
Railway Minister's Statement
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured on social media that the situation was under control. He said, "Delhi Police and RPF have reached the site. Injured passengers have been taken to the hospital. Special trains are running to manage the rush." A high-level inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident.
Delhi Lt Governor Responds
Delhi Lt Governor V.K. Saxena expressed condolences to the victims' families and directed authorities to ensure swift relief measures. He said, "Hospitals are on standby, and relief personnel have been deployed."
Overcrowding and Delays
A heavy rush occurred as the Prayagraj Express arrived at platform 14. Passengers from delayed trains, including the Swatantra Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani, added to the congestion. Railway stations across India are experiencing surges in travelers with the Mahakumbh Mela concluding on February 26.
