Government Increases Help for Fishermen Before Fishing Ban in Andhra Pradesh

In a significant move toward fulfilling a key electoral promise, the Andhra Pradesh coalition government has launched the ‘Matsyakara Cheyutha’ scheme to support fishermen during the annual fishing ban. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu formally inaugurated the scheme today at Budagatlapalem, a coastal village in Etcherla Mandal of Srikakulam district.

As part of this initiative, the financial assistance provided to eligible fishermen families has been doubled—from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 per annum. The government will immediately deposit ₹258 crore directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries across the state following the scheme’s launch.

The scheme aims to provide crucial financial relief during the 61-day marine fishing ban enforced every year from April 15 to June 14, a period during which fishermen are unable to pursue their livelihoods.

Local fishing communities have welcomed the initiative, particularly appreciating the timely disbursal of the enhanced assistance at the beginning of the ban period. Many expressed confidence that the support would ease their burden during the two-month off-season.

Etcherla MLA Ishwar Rao stated that the Chief Minister’s visit has brought renewed hope to fishermen families, reiterating the government’s dedication to addressing their needs. Minister Atchannaidu is overseeing the arrangements for the Chief Minister’s tour.
