Amid heavy rains in the state, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held an urgent meeting with officials from the CMO and conducted a teleconference with the Eluru District Collector and SP on Thursday night. With concerns over potential breaches in Pedda Vagu at two locations, Naidu directed officials to take immediate steps to prevent human and cattle casualties. Reports indicate that floodwaters may affect 15 villages in Andhra Pradesh and three in Telangana.
Earlier on Thursday, five individuals were rescued after their car was swept away by floodwaters from the Velerupadu Pedavagu stream in Eluru district. Continuous rainfall has severely impacted normal life in Agency regions of Eluru, Alluri Sitarama Raju, and parts of East Godavari district.
The situation prompted the opening of gates and the discharge of floodwaters, leading to alerts in downstream areas. Residents were cautioned against crossing swollen streams or venturing into waterlogged areas.
Meanwhile, heavy rains in Godavari districts, including Rajamahendravaram and Nidadavolu, caused significant waterlogging and subsequent traffic disruptions. The flood control room at Dowleswaram Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage reported a discharge of 1.53 lakh cusecs of surplus water into the sea, with expectations of rising flood levels in the days ahead.
Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh inspected the rain-affected RTC bus stand and other inundated areas in Nidadavolu, directing immediate water pumping efforts. In neighboring Telangana, 30 people stranded in Narayanapuram village were successfully rescued by the Indian Navy
following flood releases from the Pedda Vagu project.
Indian Navy's Eastern Naval Command, including INS Dega, deployed multiple aircraft for extensive search and rescue operations, including P8I, Dornier, Sea Kings, and ALH helicopters.
