NCERT Committee Recommends Replacing 'India' with 'Bharat' in School Textbooks

On October 25th in New Delhi, a seven-member panel from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), led by committee chairman C. I. Issac, made a recommendation to substitute 'India' with 'Bharat' in school textbooks. The NCERT has disclosed that they are presently in the process of developing new syllabi and textbooks for this purpose, with various Curricular Area Groups consisting of domain experts being engaged by the NCERT. Consequently, they stated that it is too early to provide any definitive comments on the matter.

Issac clarified that the panel's recommendation to replace 'India' with 'Bharat' in NCERT books has received approval. Additionally, the panel proposed the inclusion of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) in the curriculum across all subjects and advocated for the introduction of 'classical history' in history textbooks instead of 'ancient history.'

Issac, a recipient of the Padma Shri award, highlighted the historical significance of the term 'Bharat,' noting its mention in the Vishnu Puran and its use by Sanskrit poet and playwright Kalidas. He raised concerns about the current curriculum's emphasis on the country's defeats without acknowledging its victories, citing an instance where Indian tribals defeated the Afghan invader Muhammad Ghori during his return after plundering India.

Furthermore, Issac pointed out the absence of the Battle of Colachel (Kulachal) in the textbooks, a significant historical event in August 1741 where the Travancore kingdom triumphed over the Dutch East India Company, effectively ending Dutch colonial endeavors in India.
