HYDERABAD: BRS working president KT Rama Rao expressed strong outrage on Monday over the Congress government's decision to place a statue of Rajiv Gandhi at a location originally designated for the Telangana Talli statue.
Rama Rao criticized the move, calling it a “shameful act” that undermines Telangana’s identity. He announced that if the BRS wins the next Assembly elections, the party would relocate the Rajiv Gandhi statue to Gandhi Bhavan.
In his statement, Rama Rao condemned Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's decision and urged BRS workers and supporters to conduct 'paal abhishekam' at all Telangana Talli statues across the state on Tuesday as a form of protest. He called for widespread dissent against the Congress government's decision.
Rama Rao emphasized that the installation of the Rajiv Gandhi statue at the designated spot for Telangana Talli had deeply hurt the people of Telangana. He advised the chief minister to correct the mistake immediately or face the consequences from the people of Telangana.
While Rama Rao stated that the BRS has no objection to a Rajiv Gandhi statue being installed, he objected to its current location, which was specifically chosen for Telangana Talli. He reminded that this location was selected by KCR in July 2023, a decision widely accepted by the people of Telangana.
He assured that the BRS would take necessary steps to ensure the Telangana Talli statue is installed in its rightful place. Rama Rao accused the Congress of compromising Telangana’s self-respect for political gains, claiming that Revanth Reddy prioritized approval from Delhi over local sentiments.
Rama Rao concluded by asserting that the BRS is committed to protecting Telangana’s identity and interests, and would continue to fight against any compromise for political benefits.
