Government Appoints Tuhin Kanta Pandey as New SEBI Chief for 3 Years

New Delhi, Feb 27: The Government of India has appointed Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He will take office for an initial tenure of three years, starting soon.

Pandey replaces the current SEBI Chairperson, Madhabi Puri Buch, whose term ends on March 1. The Cabinet’s Appointments Committee announced this decision on Thursday.

The official government statement reads, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS (OR:1987), Finance Secretary, and Secretary, Department of Revenue, to the post of Chairman, SEBI, initially for a period of three years or until further orders.”

In January, the government invited applications for the SEBI Chairperson role and set February 17, 2025, as the last date for submissions.

As the new SEBI Chief, Pandey will have the option to either receive a salary as admissible to a Secretary of the Government of India or a consolidated salary of Rs 5,62,500 per month, excluding house and car.

Madhabi Puri Buch, who served as SEBI Chairperson since March 2022, will be stepping down as her term ends. She became the first woman to lead SEBI. During her career, she held several key positions in the private sector before joining SEBI.

This new appointment is expected to bring fresh leadership to SEBI as it continues to oversee India’s capital markets.
