In anticipation of Suresh Gopi's scheduled appearance before the Nadakkavu police for questioning in the case involving the "improper touching" of a woman journalist on Wednesday, a large crowd gathered at the police station to show their support for the actor-turned-politician.
Starting from 9 a.m., BJP supporters, along with men and women from the general public, awaited the arrival of top state BJP leaders to lead a protest march toward the Nadakkavu Police station.
During the inauguration of the protest march, State BJP president K. Surendran asserted that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was anxious, especially after the actor led a march in support of depositors at the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank in Thrissur.
Surendran claimed, "Vijayan's police have fabricated the case, but Gopi will remain untouched. The public fully supports him, and this is nothing more than a retaliatory action by the police following instructions from Vijayan's office."
Other prominent BJP leaders participating in the march included former party president Krishna Das, as well as veterans Sobha Surendran and M.T. Ramesh.
Around noon, the actor arrived at the police station, and the substantial police presence at the station had difficulty allowing his car to enter the premises.
Dressed in a white shirt and sunglasses, Gopi, known for portraying memorable police roles in his nearly four-decade film career, acknowledged his supporters as he entered the station with his legal representatives.
"He is like a god to us. We don't understand what mistake he made, as we all witnessed the specific incident that led to this. He is a wonderful person, and we will not leave until he is released," expressed an upset woman.
Another woman insisted that the complainant needs to clarify the wrongdoing allegedly committed by Gopi. "We are willing to meet her and understand the situation. If anything happens to Gopi, things will take a wrong turn," she added.
On October 27, Gopi, while addressing the media, placed his hand on the woman journalist's shoulder while responding to her questions. Despite his subsequent apology, the incident sparked protests from journalist bodies, leading to the woman journalist filing a complaint against the actor.
Gopi is slated to contest the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket, and many of his supporters allege that Vijayan has acted unjustly, a claim they believe time will refute.
