As inflows from the Godavari River resumed the Hyderabad Water Board decided to dismantle its emergency pumps

Hyderabad: Following the resumption of water inflows from the Godavari River (Sripada Yellampally reservoir), the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has taken precautionary measures by removing emergency pumps and pipelines used for pumping water to Hyderabad.
"All pumping motors and pipelines have been dismantled, relocated, and stored to prevent damage from potential submersion in water," officials from HMWSSB stated. They highlighted that recent rains in catchment areas and inflows from Kadem reservoirs have caused water levels in Yellampally to rise.
In contrast, concerns persist over the Nagarjunasagar reservoir where no recent rainfall has been reported. The water levels in Krishna (Akkampally) are declining, prompting continued pumping efforts using 10 motors since April. Authorities are hopeful for rainfall in the Krishna basin by the end of this month or early next month, based on historical data from the Irrigation department.
Presently, Nagarjunasagar reservoir stands at 140 meters, below its full capacity of 148 meters, holding 4.88 tmcft of water out of its total capacity of 20.175 tmcft. Last month, it was recorded at 139 meters with 4.22 tmcft available. The dismantling of equipment and pipelines by HMWSSB was completed in less than three weeks.
Currently, HMWSSB is drawing 162 million gallons of water per day (MGD) from Yellampally to meet the water needs of various parts of Hyderabad. Forecasts indicate possible rains in the Kadem reservoir catchment area later this week, which could further increase inflows into Yellampally reservoir and raise water levels.
Hyderabad and surrounding areas receive a total water supply of approximately 576 mgd, sourced from Krishna, Godavari, Singur, Manjira, Himayathsagar, and Osmansagar reservoirs. This includes allocations of 246 mgd for Hyderabad, 237 mgd for GHMC peripheral areas, 62 mgd for ORR areas, and 30.36 mgd for rural areas through the Mission Bhageeratha scheme.
