Officials Release Water from Nagarjunasagar Project into Canal System for Irrigation

NALGONDA: Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and other officials, released water from the Nagarjunasagar project into the canal system on Friday. This initiative aims to support irrigation across over 6.30 lakh acres, which are divided into three zones.
Uttam Kumar Reddy announced that water has been distributed to the first zone, which includes Nalgonda and Suryapet districts, known for their extensive paddy cultivation. Water supply to the second zone, encompassing Khammam and Bhadradri-Kothagudem districts, is expected to commence next week.
The Nagarjunasagar reservoir, which had recently reached a critical low of 500 feet, is anticipated to rise to its full reservoir level of 590 feet within the next 24 hours. The project has been receiving a daily inflow of 5.3 lakh cusecs, significantly boosting its storage with over 40 tmcft of floodwater each day.
Looking ahead, the government plans to develop a new ayacut of 30-35 lakh acres over the next five years, aiming to revolutionize rural Telangana. An annual goal has been set to establish 6 to 6.5 lakh acres of new ayacut each year.
