Bird Flu Scare Triggers Surge in Fish Sales
The impact of bird flu has significantly reduced chicken sales, prompting non-vegetarian consumers to seek alternatives. As a result, fish sales have surged, leading to price increases of ₹30 to ₹100 per kilogram, depending on the variety. Despite the price hike, demand remains strong.
Fish Prices Rise Amid Growing Demand
On Sunday, the Mushirabad fish market saw an overwhelming number of buyers, with traders selling nearly 60 tonnes of fish in a single day, compared to the usual 40 tonnes. The rising demand has led to increased prices. The cost of Rava fish has gone up from ₹140 to ₹160-₹180 per kg, while Bocha fish is now selling at ₹140 per kg instead of ₹120. Korameenu (Murrel fish) has risen from ₹450 to ₹550 per kg, and prawns are now ₹350 per kg, up from ₹300.
Fish vendors attribute this surge in demand and prices directly to the bird flu scare, which has made consumers wary of purchasing chicken.
