Guntur Railway Station Achieves NSG-2 Status
Guntur Railway Station has attained Non-Suburban Group-2 (NSG-2) status by generating an annual revenue of ₹110 crore and serving 5.92 million passengers during the 2023-24 financial year (FY).
According to Guntur Divisional Railway Manager M. Ramakrishna, stations classified as NSG-2 generate annual passenger earnings between ₹100 crore and ₹500 crore or handle 10 to 20 million outward passengers per year. Ramakrishna expressed pride in the achievement, noting, “We are proud to achieve NSG-2 status, which recognizes our efforts to enhance infrastructure and services. We will continue to address the growing needs of our passengers.”
Geographically significant, Guntur has now become one of the top 11 railway stations in the South Central Railway (SCR) zone under the NSG-2 category, as stated by Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Ch. Pradeep Kumar.
In recent years, the station has undergone a significant upgrade, making it one of the best in the division. The main entrance on the east side has been completely revamped, featuring a pedestrian walkway, a ramp for the differently-abled, a separate pathway, and a parking lot for auto rickshaws, enhancing commuter convenience.
With this new status, the Guntur Railway Division now includes five stations under NSG-4, eleven under NSG-5, forty under NSG-6, and four halt stations. The division also set new records in the 2023-24 fiscal year, achieving its highest-ever originating freight loading of 3.364 million tonnes, a 21.6% increase from the 2.763 million tonnes recorded in 2022-23—marking the highest growth rate of any division in SCR.
The Guntur division, established on April 1, 2003, spans three revenue districts in Andhra Pradesh—Guntur, Prakasam, and Kurnool—and three districts in Telangana—Suryapet, Yadadri, and Nalgonda. It covers a total route length of 484.78 km in Andhra Pradesh and 144.94 km in Telangana, with 75 stations across both states.
